Literacy Narrative A Dream Begins with Literacy No matter how difficult and boring reading and writing may seem, it is imperative because they are life skills that will always be useful. Fifth graders should stay confident even when writing gets tough because writing helps students to learn and they are skills that will be used throughout life to help them communicate and broaden their vocabulary, and it is necessary for school past the elementary age.

Understand and adapt to rhetorical and contextual differences in tasks involving writing, reading, speaking, and listening With the Literacy Narrative being my first major paper in this class, I learned how to correctly identify with who my audience was.

I understood how the purpose of my claim was to be directed to my specific audience. Also, the style of writing needed to fit the audience that I spoke to.

An example of that would be how my audience for this paper was fifth graders.

It would not be appropriate to write professionally, using advanced vocabulary when my call to action was directed to fifth grade students.

Reading and writing will help fifth graders communicate clearly and broaden their vocabulary. My earliest memory of reading was when I was a child.

As I grew up, I did not want to read anymore. I actually decided that I completely hated it. All throughout grade school I made sure to avoid any reading that I could. Writing was something I was great at as a fifth grader. I loved it because I was given prompts that were fun and fictional.

I was able to be creative through my writing ability. As I got older, the prompts got harder and they seemed to turn into things that were unrelatable to me. I began to doubt myself. I was really hard on myself because I knew that all those years ago as a fifth grader, I felt invincible!

Still to this day I have a hard time finding the joy in it but every once in a while I will read a book. However, I have learned that it has helped broaden my vocabulary because once I read a word I do not understand, I will look it up and then be able to use it in my every day language.

Also, it helps with being able to communicate with professors when writing a formal paper, through an email, and even communicating with friends through texting.

Communication is a skill that is constantly used every day. Expanding on abilities to read and write at a younger age will allow kids to thrive as they get older. It is necessary for fifth graders to learn to read and write because they will use those skills later on in school.

Many students often despise to read and write but need to understand the importance of it. Starting off with ways to break down an article or information from a text book, or jotting down examples from a prompt to get thoughts down on paper will ultimately produce better results.
